Elite
Written in 1984 by Ian Bell and David Braben, Elite was revolutionary in terms of concept and graphics. Although originally released on the BBC Microcomputer, ports have since been made for many home computers and consoles including the NES and ZX Spectrum. Set in space, you begin your career as a newly qualified pilot, with a basic but highly upgradeable Cobra Mark III ship, and progress by means of trade and combat. The nature of the game is such that high-quality graphics are not essential, and with its near endless gameplay possibilities, Elite will always be regarded as one of the most original, and perhaps best, games of all time.

Quite simply the greatest game of all time. I played this game at least one week for more than 10 years, it was that good. No other game has come close to having that kind of effect on me (World of Warcraft is starting to get there). At the time the graphics weren't revolutionary, but they didn't need to be. What made this game so good, was it's completely open ended gameplay. It's called a sandbox game nowadays, where you have total freedom to do what you want, when you want and how you want without being directed by the game developers along a certain path. An absolutely stunning concept when it was first released and still the best example of total gaming freedom to date.
If you've never played it, get an emulator and find this game. You will not regret it.
